William Baker is a Director and a Photographer. He has a passion for pop culture, fashion, and stage revues. Beginning his career as a fashion stylist, he has become one of the most recognizable names as a Creative Director in the worlds of fashion and pop music. William develops all design concepts and directs all creative aspects relating to live performance including choreography, set, lighting, video, and costume design. His exceptional talent has given Baker the opportunity to work in a variety of media– film, stage, and photography.
William has directed, photographed and/or styled some of the most influential names in music including Kylie Minogue, Outkast, The Killers, Boy George, Rihanna, Jamiroquai, Britney Spears, Lily Allen, Garbage, Westlife, Leona Lewis, Bjork, Kelsea Ballerini and Tricky. Most recently he directed Kim Petras’ Feed The Beast Tour, a spectacular, subversive, and fearless pop celebration of sex, love, and identity.
William’s close, two decade plus creative relationship with singer Kylie Minogue resulted in some of the most iconic, enduring, and often referenced, pop imagery of our time. His love of revue and the legacy of the showgirl is present in much of his work including the award-winning Kylie Fever, X Tours, Kylie: Showgirl World Tour, and Kylie: Homecoming Tour establishing her as one of the worlds best live performers and Baker as a unique director with his own powerful aesthetic and style. A highlight of his career is the Aphrodite : Les Folies’ World Tour, also with Kylie which redefined what was possible for a touring live show with its use of water. He also directed the documentary feature film, White Diamond: a Personal Portrait of Kylie Minogue documenting the stars return to the stage after her bout with cancer. Baker has written and produced three books with Kylie Minogue celebrating their work together– Kylie: Evidence in 1999, La La La in 2002 and Kylie Fashion’ in 2012.
William earned a BA degree in Theology from the University of London’s Kings College and cites his passion for the iconic from his love of religious iconography . His passion for fashion was nurtured early on, working for fashion muse Isabella Blow and designer Vivienne Westwood. His stage work is a fusion of fashion and performance. He continues to work as a stylist today with fashion icon and music legend Boy George.
In 2007 Baker made his directorial debut in London’s West End with his revival of Rent, Rent Remixed at the Duke of York Theatre. His stage collaborations with UK burlesque star Miss Polly Rae in their critically acclaimed collaboration The Hurly Burly Show at Leicester Square Theatre inLondon’s West End, re-invented burlesque and revue for the new millennium, leading to subsequent performance runs at The Garrick Theatre, London (2010) and The Duchess Theatre, London (2012) as well as performances in Sydney and Emperors Palace Johannesburg (2012). Baker also directed a drag show revue with the drag vocal quartet The Supreme Fabulettes which enjoyed a UK national theatre tour and several performance runs at The Leicester Square Theatre, London.
In 2019 Baker was hired to co-direct and co-author the Grand Show Arise at Berlin’s prestigious Friedrichstadt Palast theatre, but the pandemic travel restrictions made it impossible for him to direct. The show that he co-created with the Palast’s Creative Director Oliver Hoppmann finally opened in 2022 and has been one of the theatre’s best-selling productions. Framed around theuplifting story of a photographer who loses his muse, the show was reviewed as ‘The most spectacular show in Europe’ and ‘doesn’t just boast glitter and glamour, it has a powerful and heartfelt message for our times’ (Daily Express, UK), a description which could be applied to a lot of Baker’s work.
William was awarded the Elle Style Visionary Award in 2008 for his eclectic and glamorous cocktail of work. His photography has appeared in prestigious print titles such as i-D, Sunday Times magazine, Numero and Australian Vogue and published in K a compilation of photos of Kylie Minogue and Book of Igor, a reportage love letter to a muse.
