Shannon Lewis is a sought after dance educator, choreographer, director, performer, and creative director. Born in Toronto, Canada and now a dual citizen of the US and Canada, she has lived in NYC for almost three decades.
Shannon is a current faculty member at Steps on Broadway and Broadway Dance Center in NYC. As an Adjunct Professor at New York City’s renowned Pace University Commercial Dance Program, she brings a unique perspective on both theatre and commercial dance performance to her work with her students, giving them a bridge to a full and successful professional dance career. She has been a special Guest Faculty member at The School at Jacob’s Pillow for over a decade. Along with teaching students from around the globe, she has created new choreography for world premieres at this world famous dance festival. Shannon spent many years learning and performing the original choreography of Bob Fosse, and was mentored by Gwen Verdon, Ann Reinking, Nicole Fosse and Chet Walker. She is proud to be a reconstructeur for the Verdon Fosse Legacy, passing on her knowledge of this legendary work.
As a performer, Shannon has a 25 year Broadway legacy. Her performance of “I Gotcha” in the Tony award winning original Broadway cast of FOSSE, along with 10 Broadway credits and countless television and film appearances solidified her iconic status in the dance and theatre worlds.
She starred as “Ursula” opposite Christina Applegate in the Broadway revival of Sweet Charity. She played “Miss Krumholtz” with Daniel Radcliffe, Darren Criss and Nick Jonas in the Broadway revival of How to Succeed in Business without Really Trying. She starred as “the girl in the yellow dress” in Contact. Other Broadway credits: The Mystery of Edwin Drood; The People in the Picture; Curtains; Look of Love; Candide; Crazy for You. Broadway National Tours – A Chorus Line as “Sheila” and Pippin as “Fastrada”.
Television and film appearances include The Today Show, the Tony Awards, PBS Great Performances, The Kennedy Center Honors, The Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, Late Show, and groundbreaking projects The Sound of Music LIVE on NBC starring Carrie Underwood, and the epic musical opening of the feature film TED 2.
Shannon is the choreographer of the groundbreaking world premiere new musical THE SECRET SILK by Stephen Schwartz, John Tartaglia and Jim Henson Creature Shop. She also choreographed the award winning new musical film STUCK starring Ashanti, Amy Madigan and Giancarlo Esposito. She choreographed the premiere of a critically acclaimed and re-imagined version BEAUTY AND THE BEAST. She conceived, directed and choreographed 4 original works that premiered at world renowned Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival. Her other choreographer/director stage credits include THE PROMPTER at Bay Street Theatre, MAMMA MIA at Buck’s County Playhouse, SHOW TIME! at York Theatre, CLAUDIO QUEST at Signature Theatre, JOSEPH AND THE AMAZING TECHNICOLOR DREAMCOAT for 3D Theatricals.
Shannon is passionate about teaching and loves inspiring you to jump in and challenge yourself. She believes a strong technical foundation along with development of intelligent dynamics and style are the keys to building beautiful and well rounded dancers. Through her keen eye, director’s mind and challenging choreography, she will be a bridge from contemporary to theatre, guiding you to your point of view and storytelling; the heart of finding your unique and important personal expression. She will help you find focus in your movement and connect to your musicality, bringing out new layers in shapes and style. Shannon believes that working with heart and discipline in the studio also needs to be balanced with a free and full expression in performance. Trusting in the training and then letting go to find the magic, allows each dancer to blossom and express to their fullest. Shannon asks her students to cultivate an open and engaged energy, bringing personal goals, self knowledge and joy to both training and the professional world. She will give you the tools to be a dancer and performer that is “ready for anything”.
