Jason E. Bernard is a world-renowned tap dance educator and the 2022 Industry Dance Award Nominee for Favorite Convention Teacher. He is a native of The Bronx, New York where he first began teaching at Mind Builders Creative Arts Center. He is the Co-Artistic Director of “Go Hard Dance Studio” in Harlem, New York. Jason is a faculty member for LA Dance Magic and he is the director of the LA Dance Magic Tap Company. For 5 years he was on the faculty at Broadway Dance Center, Steps on Broadway, Peridance Center and Harlem School of The Arts. His unique tap pedagogical approach has been the foundation for numerous tap dancers and dance studios throughout the East coast.
At the age of 17 Jason made his Broadway debut in the Tony Award winning musical “Bring In ‘da Noise, Bring In ‘da Funk”. Three years later, he was back on Broadway in Riverdance at the Gershwin Theatre. He went on to do the National and International tours of Riverdance which spanned 5 continents. For 3 years, he resided in Dublin, Ireland where he was a part of CoisCéim Dance Theatre for two productions including “Dodgems” and “Boxes”. He was a featured performer, “J. Bunny,” in the Spike Lee, directed film “Bamboozled”. The next year he was featured in the showtime original feature, “Bojangles,” Starring Gregory Hines. Jason was also an original cast member of “Cotton Club Parade”( After Midnight) at City Center Encores! which was transferred to Broadway and won a Tony Award for Best Choreography.
As a dance educator, Jason believes that you hold the key to unlock your greatest potential as a tap dancer. His technique, which includes fundamental and foundational tap steps, is supported by helping you confidently express your instinctual and intuitive reactions. Inclusive of this technique is singing and scatting the exact rhythms of the choreography. In addition, Jason will help you strengthen your inner metronome and develop your balance distribution to produce perfect timing and sound clarity of tap steps. Jason’s choreography, that he customizes specifically for you, is completely adaptable to Broadway style music, jazz music, and contemporary music. Jason currently has many students who are performing throughout the world in many different mediums of the arts.
